 | 09:00 am - Not going to the Wellcome tonight I have decided in light of the ice and such that today is probably not a good day for going into town if I don't have to (and I don't as I can take my 12:30 - 5:30 meeting as a phone conference), so I am going to postpone going to the Wellcome for another, less icy day. I figure the people who were going to join me might have likely avoided going into town anyway; will contact each of you to confirm.

 | 10:27 am - 2009 Movies List Because others are doing it... alphebetical order
500 Days of Summer - Theater Avatar 3D - Theater District 9 - Theater Funny People - Theater Harry Potter and the yada yada - Theater G.I. Joe - Theater Julie & Julia - Theater Mall Cop - Video Sherlock Holmes - Theater Star Trek - Theater Watchmen - Theater
There are many movies I wanted to see right as they were coming out but I didn't see and I feel okay with that. This is roughly a movie a month at the theater and that seems reasonable to me. I saw Star Trek twice so the math does work out sort of since I saw Paul Blart on video.

 | 07:41 pm - First game of Puerto Rico in ages This was actually a good day: up a bit too early, but had a productive morning with the added highlight of sniperi's Christmas Lucky Charms for breakfast, then off to Streatham for lunch with lovelybug where we made plans to see the Wellcome exhibit on Thursday and to find time to see Sherlock Holmes the next week.
I then trucked back home as we had managed to lure laurenclose over to our house (oh, the advantages of having neighbors!) for a game of Puerto Rico. It had really been a LONG time since we played, at least a year, possibly more! I assumed my usual role of "teacher of the game," and Lauren assumed the traditional role of "newbie who kicks my ass." I couldn't believe I'd just forgotten pretty much every strategy I'd ever used to play the game - going back over my old posts in seattle_rico, I clearly had many of them; Lauren followed the cash-heavy "Starbucks" plan (though by accident) and took us both to the cleaners. Final score:
L: 55 (19 vp, 22 bldg, 14 bonus - 2 bldgs) J: 51 (22 vp, 18 bldg, 11 bonus - 2 bldgs) Me: 44 (22 vp, 16 bldg, 7 bonus - 1 bldg, wah)
I kinda screwed myself by not getting a warehouse to keep my stuff in, and boy, I rotted left and right. L also decided I was the threat, and worked on shutting me out - ultimately I think a successful ploy but just one more good move by shadowdaddy woulda got him out front of the pack. Whoda thunk with a harbor that I couldn't have done better - but shipping diversity ensured I was blocked off of our piddly three boats over and over again. Aaargh! Well, at any rate, it was great to get back "in the game" again, and I'm reminded why this was always my favorite of all strategy board games.

 | 07:15 pm - Hiking in 8 degrees JW and I made the decision yesterday that we wanted to go to Starved Rock today. The fact that is was only 4 degrees in Utica when we left Chicago did not stop us. Nor did the fact the high was supposed to be 8. Over the summer when we went we had said we wanted to go in the winter and see the frozen falls. Well...this is my only Saturday off until August (as far as I'm aware).
So we went down and started hiking (pictures below). It really didn't feel that cold, once we started going. Hands got cold a few times, but really not too bad. We stayed on the river trail the majority of the time and hiked all the way down to LaSalle Canyon again (about 2 miles from the start). It was beautiful, absolutely beautiful down there. I did slip twice, in the same exact spot...but it's not surprising. We walked behind a waterfall, and well, it was 8 degrees, so even though the water was still falling (some) and JW asked me to turn around, and whoops! Then a few moments later I wanted to get a picture of the two of us behind the falls, and, whoops, the other side. So, you know, two bruises, just fine.
So we walked back to the lodge and into the car...then over to the Nodding Onion for lunch. So yummy. Hot Chocolate, Roasted Garlic & Potato soup & a Caesar salad with bacon, eggs, tomato, and homemade dressing...yum, yum, yum. JW had a delicious burger. Now there are two places down there that we both adore.
Came back to the city and took the dogs out for a walk. I'm telling you, the twenty minute walk we took the dogs on was colder than the 2- 2.5 hours of hiking we did today. But, now, we're enjoying the fire, about to enjoy the pot roast that was in the crock pot all day, and watching "Up".

 | 12:10 am - Public post about today: Ozu film festival starts The BFI is having an Ozu film festival. It started yesterday but wisely I decided not to make any kind of strong plans for that day. Instead, I started the festival today with a silent movie double feature, "I Flunked, But ..." and "A Straightforward Boy," with piano accompaniment promised.
Well, this was really one for the Ozu collector, as "Boy" was missing part of the beginning and the end and generally seemed lacking in plot. A young boy is kidnapped and gets the better of his kidnappers, forcing them to buy him toys, attacking him with them, then setting his toy-hungry friends after them.
Next was "Flunked." This was supposed to be quite the comedy, but while I got a bit of a kick out of watching the five students do coordinated moves and realized there was a comedy moment in that the one guy who didn't pass was the only one who got a job, still, there was nearly a total lack of character development or other interest in this movie and I had a hard time not dozing off.
Still, I'm excited about the series as a whole, and am looking forward to my next trip back to the BFI to see more movies by this Japanese master. However, I may choose to see more talkies in general.

 | 04:46 pm - update Hi everyone,
Yeah, it's been a really LONG time since I've been on the LJ to post or read. 34 weeks according to the LJ signed in page. Sounds about right. The last post I made was when Lia died on May 6th. I still miss her.
However, I adopted another kitten from the Humane Society on August 16th. I tried an older cat, but she and my other cat Velvet did NOT get along. It started with hissing (no big deal) but as the days progressed it went to growls and then fighting. Vel didn't deserve that as she's a mellow cat so I took the other one back and met this kitten. When I was filling out the paperwork to adopt her I discovered that her birthdate was very familiar to me. May 6, 2009. Bittersweet irony.
I named her Raven but she has an abundance of nicknames... Brat, Baby-Cat, Bran-Dubh,& Ria are among them. Like all my cats she's black, but unlike the others she has a cute white marking--a triangle low on her tummy that makes her look like she's wearing a bikini (topless). :) She has filled my life with such joy that I smile even thinking about her. She plays fetch with a wadded up receipt or the sparkle-ball, she brings a string to me to play with--well, actually she picks one end up in her mouth and drags it past me to get ME to "pounce" on the free end! LOL. And New Year's Eve I watched her playing string with Velvet! Velvet had one end that she was playing with while Raven watched, and everytime Vel started to drop it, Raven would reach down and tug on the other end with her teeth which would renew Vel's interest. This went on for a good 10-15 minutes...to my delight.
And Xmas, I had one gift that had a good chunk of wrapping paper which I put on the floor for her to play under. I ended up getting the camera out after she poked a hole in it big enough to stick her head through and was wearing the paper like a poncho...
The horse I lease, Magic, has been lame for a few months, through the most beautiful riding days as well as these past 6 weeks or so which have been too wet and muddy to even think about riding. The vet said it was a hyper-extension tendon strain, but now she's sound again and we can ride slowly and get her back into work again. Too bad Magic doesn't understand the "Slowly" part of bringing her back! She doesn't relax and walk--she prances, piaffes and "parade-walks" and turns sideways doing half-passes and leg yields without being asked.... She really wants to go.
No, I haven't seen Avatar yet, but plan to on my upcoming "weekend" (Mon/Tues). Current Location: home Current Mood: relaxed
